On 23 September 2025, at Sao Mai Hotel, Cao Lanh ward, Dong Thap province, Rikolto in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap Province, will organize a community and stakeholder consultation meeting for the project “Building a Sustainable Rice Value Chain for Smallholder Farmers in Dong Thap Province, 2022–2035”, aligned with the Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG).

Through this meeting, Rikolto seeks to create a multi-stakeholder dialogue space to listen, exchange, and co-develop solutions for a rice sector in Vietnam that is more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. The meeting also aims to consult stakeholders, including local authorities, farmer’s cooperatives, companies and international organisations to improve the project’s design and expected outcomes; to share information on potential impacts (both positive and negative) during the planning and implementation phases; and to establish a mechanism for stakeholders to contribute inputs, provide feedback, and raise concerns throughout the project’s lifecycle.

The project aspires to increase incomes for farmers and agri-businesses – including women and young people – while improving the availability of sustainable food products in the market. At the same time, it aims to reduce the environmental footprint of rice farming by lowering water consumption and methane emissions through the adoption of the Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) method.

With this approach, Rikolto promotes sustainable farming models that combine advanced monitoring technologies with the active participation of local communities.

The project aims to support around 8,000 farming households in Dong Thap Province in adopting sustainable rice cultivation practices. This will help reduce negative impacts on the environment while enabling farmers to increase their income by lowering production costs, improving their opportunities to access and market their products in both domestic and international markets, and diversifying their sources of livelihood.

The project is jointly implemented by the Department of Agriculture & Environment of Dong Thap Province and Rikolto, with funding from the Livelihoods Venture Fund and technical support from CarbonFarm.

We will continue to share updates on the project.
